See the below list of terminology for the technology used in Camillus brand products.
Titanium Bonded®
Titanium Bonded is not painted or plated, but an application of a unique formulation of titanium and chromium nitride to the surface of cutting blades that actually penetrates and treats the metal to create a permanent bond. The patented Titanium Bonding process provides the following benefits; corrosion resistance, adhesive resistance and the process itself makes the stainless steel 3x harder than untreated stainless providing a blade that stays sharper longer.
Carbonitride Titanium™:
Carbonitride Titanium is one of the hardest surface treatments containing titanium. Harder than carbide. Harder than chrome. Our proprietary process creates a permanent molecular bond with the blade surface. Will not flake, blister, chip, or peel. A complex crystalline structure forms which protects the blade surface against wear, staining, and damage. Patent pending technology.
Backbone:
Backbone refers to the thickness of the blade. The Camillus Backbone is the strength behind the cut. A thick backbone provides an unparalleled rigidity so the cut is as straight and true as intended.
Serration:
Some material requires a "sawing motion" vs. a slicing motion. Camillus offers various serration patterns on our knives to provide you with the most appropriate, desired angle.
Glass Filled Nylon:
Glass filled nylon handles are found on our TigerSharp knives. We add glass-filled materials to polypropylene, ABS and other substraits in order to provide the strongest, most rigid handles designed for the TigerSharp technology.
Bamboo:
Bamboo is an environmentally sustainable organic material that regenerates itself faster than any wood. This means Camillus is preserving the environment by using a material that regenerates quickly.
Carbon Fiber:
Carbon fiber is actually made from a polymer called polyacrylonitrile combined with woven Kevlar during a complicated heating process. It is widely used because it has a number of characteristics that make it ideal for products required to be light in weight but extremely strong! Carbon fiber is 5X Stronger than steel and lighter than aluminum!
Micarta:
A synthetic material made from paper, linen or thick canvas impregnated with resin under pressure. Micarta® is extremely resistant to water, cold, heat, rot or corrosion therefore it is a perfect material for knife handles. Micarta® is a registered trademark of Norplex-Micarta.
G10:
An extremely durable makeup of layers of fiberglass soaked in resin, then highly compressed and baked. Impervious to moisture or liquid and physically stable under climate change.
Glass-Kydex:
KYDEX® is a plastic that combines the advantageous properties of both the acrylic and the polyvinyl chloride components. The combination of strength properties of KYDEX places it at the highest level among thermoforming materials making it perfect for a form fit knife sheath.Kydex® is a registered trademark of Kydex, LLC.
VG-10:
A unique formulation of steel with a high carbon content. It contains various amounts of one or more of the following: Chromium, Vanadium and Cobalt. VG-10 is considered a "super steel," because it is designed to maintain sharpness and durability. In addition to its exceptional edge retention, being a stainless steel, VG-10 is also surprisingly corrosion resistant due to its fairly high chromium content.
AUS-8 Steel:
AUS-8 is a Japanese medium-carbon, high-chromium stainless steel. One word says it all, "balance". It offers exceptional balance between toughness, edge sharpness, and corrosion resistance. Balance provides lasting value. AUS-8 ranks among the hardest, toughest, and most rust-resistant knife alloys. It's a trusted favorite that enthusiasts prefer time and again.
