To effectively start a fire, we recommend using the cutting edge of the hatchet to shave off a small amount of the fire starter rod into a pile with your fire tinder. Hold the fire starter firmly in your hand and drag the back of the hatchet handle across it, DO NOT drag across the cutting edge as this will unnecessarily dull your blade. There is a thin coating of protective paint on the fire starter that will need to be removed so you might not get sparks on the first couple of swipes. Try to direct the sparks at the pile of tinder, the sparks created will ignite the small pile of tinder.
